RELEVANT Recommends

With all the books, shows, movies and albums that come out every week, it can be hard to choose what's worth checking out and what's, well, not. At least, it used to be hard. But with RELEVANT Recommends, things are much easier. We give you a list of five things you should be watching, reading or listening to this week.

'End of Watch'

Why We Like It

Out on DVD this week, Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Peña's performances as two cops on an LA beat was criminally under-appreciated by theater-goers. Here's hoping this nail-biting police-thriller finds the audience it deserves at home. Hollywood needs to be making more of this kind of movie.

'Searching for Sugar Man'

Why We Like It

Out on DVD this week, the documentary of the '70s rock icon that never was, Rodriguez. After being briefly heralded as the greatest rock musician of his generation, Rodriguez fell into obscurity and was never heard from again. But, unbeknownst to him, his album becomes a phenomenon in apartheid South Africa. This documentary is more fascinating and rewarding than most scripted movies you'll watch this year.

'Going Clear: Scientology, Hollywood and the Prison of Belief'

Why We Like It

One of 2013's most anticipated books released this week, and it's deserving of its hype. Going Clear is Pulitzer-prize winner Lawrence Wright's book on Scientology, delving much deeper into its origins and present-day influence than most writers have been able. The famously clandestine church has mounted a massive PR campaign as a defense against Wright's book, but anyone interested in clearing up what exactly L. Rob Hubbard's religion is all about should grab a copy. You won't be able to put it down.

'The Imposter'

Why We Like It

Out on DVD this week, the riveting documentary tells the strange tale of Nicholas, who was 13 when he was abducted from San Antonio, and turned up three years later in Spain. The family is overjoyed to have him home again, but a private investigator fears all is not as it seems. The less you know about it before you watch it, the better. But make sure you watch it.

'The Lone Bellow

Why We Like It

If you aren't convinced that this album, which came out on Tuesday, is the album to add to your collection for 2013, you haven't been paying attention. Allow this video to persuade you.
