Next-Door ... Miles Away

A man once asked Jesus, “Who is my neighbor?” Jesus’ answer, in the parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37), provided a profound challenge: Your neighbor may not be who you think.

Could it be that my neighbor—the one I am to love just as I love myself—is the kid bullied at the bus stop, or the teenager next door who’s battling suicidal thoughts? Is my neighbor the woman in a domestic violence shelter, or the homeless man huddled under a downtown bridge? Are my neighbors a world away in the Horn of Africa, struggling to keep their malnourished kids alive during the region’s worst drought in 60 years?

Thomas Nelson Publishers is committed to inspiring and equipping Christians to tangibly love their neighbors, whether they’re down the street or on the other side of the world. Through their God’s Word in Action campaign (, Christians are banding together to take specific action against human trafficking, to prevent malaria infection, to stock low-income classrooms with school supplies and much more. Drawing inspiration from the more than 2,000 verses of Scripture communicating God’s view on justice and poverty, Thomas Nelson is committed to helping Christians put God’s Word into action as they live out an answer to the question, “Who is my neighbor?”

Thomas Nelson + World Vision

God challenges His people to “stand up for the poor and the orphan; advocate for the rights of the afflicted and those in need” (Psalm 82:3, The Voice). One powerful and surprising way to do just that and make a difference in the lives of those in need is to buy a Thomas Nelson Bible. For every Thomas Nelson Bible purchased from a Christian retailer, Thomas Nelson will donate funds to World Vision’s relief work addressing the drought impacting an estimated 13.3 million people in the Horn of Africa.**

This region in Africa has had a 70 percent reduction in rainfall. In communities reliant upon raising livestock, nearly three-quarters of the herds have died. Overwhelming poverty and starvation now abound. Conflict and violence in south-central Somalia have worsened the already horrific situation, driving malnourished Somalis to flee for their lives to refugee camps in Ethiopia and Kenya.

Dadaab, Kenya, is home to the world’s largest refugee camp—a tent-city housing more than 400,000 malnourished refugees, 85 percent of whom are children and teenagers. World Vision has provided tents and emergency kits containing cooking implements, mosquito nets, soap and more in Dadaab. Throughout the region, World Vision is supplying sanitation supplies, clean water, food and more.

Along with this emergency response, World Vision also has a long-term commitment to the region where they’ve worked for decades.

Every Thomas Nelson Bible purchased from a Christian retailer directly funds the emergency work among refugee children in camps like Dadaab as well as World Vision’s long-term development work in impoverished and food-insecure communities like Turkana.

A Helping Hand

“Jesus asks us to love our neighbor as ourselves,” says Mindy Mizell, World Vision’s emergency communications manager. “So how can we come alongside those suffering in the Horn of Africa and see them—and love them—as our neighbor?” In her work in the Horn of Africa, Mizell observes: “I encountered great optimism, hope and determination in the people there. Even though they’re dressed in rags, thirsty and malnourished, they’re people, just like you and me. They have the will and determination to survive, but they need a helping hand.”

The crisis in the Horn of Africa is severe—but there is hope. And when you purchase a Thomas Nelson Bible, you are part of that help.
